Most websites today are assembled from heavy themes, page builders and stacks of plugins. That's convenient, but it comes with a cost: slow pages, constant updates, security risks and code nobody fully understands.
A hand-coded website is the opposite. Every line is written for your site, and nothing is loaded that isn't needed. The result is a site that loads fast, stays secure with very little maintenance and costs little to host.
I'm Aldrian, an independent developer. Hand-coded websites are one of my core services, and the way I build my own work.
A hand-coded example
The Lakeside Smile Studio demo in my portfolio is a small-business website I designed and hand-coded to show what a modern site can be: easy to navigate, fast, accessible to everyone and honest, with no fake reviews, ratings or credentials. It's clearly labeled as a demo.
It's built with React, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS, with lazy-loaded routes and transitions that respect reduced-motion settings. Every route is prerendered to its own HTML file with a unique title, description, canonical and social tags, plus a generated sitemap, and the site is served as static assets on Cloudflare Workers.
Why hand-coded websites are faster
Only what's needed
No unused theme features, no page builder framework and no plugin scripts loading on every page. Each page ships only its own content, styles and scripts.
Clean markup
Simple, meaningful HTML instead of deeply nested containers. Less for the browser to process, especially on phones.
Optimized from the start
Images sized and compressed properly, fonts loaded efficiently and critical styles delivered first.
Served from the edge
Static files can be delivered from data centers close to your visitors around the world.
Why they're more secure
There's no admin login on the public site, no database for attackers to query and no plugins with known vulnerabilities. Static sites remove most of the attack paths that hacked WordPress sites are exploited through. Forms and dynamic features run through small, focused serverless functions that are easy to secure.
Why they cost less to run
- Hosting for static sites is often very affordable, and sometimes free for small sites
- No theme or plugin licenses to renew
- Very little maintenance, because there's nothing to update every week
- Fewer emergencies, because there's less that can break

What about editing content?
This is the most common worry. You have options:
- I make the edits for you. Many busy owners prefer this. Small changes are quick.
- A simple editor for the parts you change often, like news, team members or prices.
- A headless CMS for sites with lots of content. See headless CMS.
You get the speed and security of static, with editing where you need it.
Who hand-coded sites are perfect for
- Service businesses, clinics, firms and consultants
- Portfolios and personal brands
- Landing pages and campaign sites
- Startups that want a fast marketing site
- Anyone tired of WordPress updates and plugin problems
- Businesses that care about speed and Core Web Vitals
When something else is better
If you publish content daily with a team of editors, or need a full online store with many plugins, WordPress, Shopify or a headless setup may fit better. I'll tell you honestly.
Built properly
- Responsive on every screen size. See responsive development.
- Accessible, following WCAG guidelines. See accessibility.
- SEO ready, with unique titles, descriptions, structured data, sitemaps and clean URLs
- Fast, with strong Core Web Vitals
- Secure, with HTTPS, security headers and safe forms
- Maintainable, with organized code and documentation
Forms, analytics and extras
Contact forms send through a reliable email service from your own domain. Analytics and consent are set up properly. Booking widgets, newsletter sign-ups, maps and chat can all be added, carefully, so they don't slow the site down.
You own everything
Code, domain and hosting accounts are all in your name. Any competent developer can work on the site later. More on owning your website.
Common misconceptions
"Hand-coded means old-fashioned." Modern static sites use current tools and frameworks. They're anything but dated.
"I won't be able to update it." Editing can be set up for exactly the parts you need.
"It'll cost more." The build may cost a little more than a theme, but running costs are often much lower.
"Static means no interactivity." Forms, animations, calculators and dynamic features all work.
Built to last
Static websites age well. With no plugins to fall out of date and no database to maintain, a well-built static site can run for years with very little attention. When you want changes, the code is organized and documented, so adding a page or section is quick.
What it usually costs
It depends mostly on the number of unique page designs and features. A focused business site is a well-defined project. You'll get a fixed quote after we talk.
How we'd work
- We talk about your business, pages and goals.
- You get a quote with scope, timeline and fixed price.
- I design key pages and share them for feedback.
