A lot of customers, especially in the Philippines, would rather send a quick message than fill in a form or make a call. If your website makes chatting easy, you catch questions while the customer is still interested.
But chat widgets have a cost. Many load heavy scripts on every page, slow down your site, cover buttons on phones and pop up at the worst moments. Done badly, chat drives people away.
I'm Aldrian, an independent developer. I add live chat and messaging to websites properly, and I build custom real-time chat when a widget isn't enough.
I built a real-time chat app
Ghostly is an end-to-end encrypted chat app I designed and built from scratch. Rooms vanish when everyone leaves, there are no accounts and you invite people with a link or QR code. Messages and photos are encrypted in the browser with AES-256-GCM, so the server only ever stores ciphertext. Each room runs as a Cloudflare Durable Object with hibernating WebSockets for messages, typing indicators and presence. It's an installable PWA, and it scored 99 for performance in Lighthouse when I measured it.
So I know real-time chat from the inside, not just from installing widgets.
Chat options for your website
Messaging app links
Simple buttons or links that open Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram with your business account. Lightweight, familiar to customers and conversations stay in apps your team already uses. Often the best first step for small businesses.
Live chat platforms
Hosted live chat tools with a website widget, team inbox, mobile apps for staff, saved replies and chat history. Good for businesses with a support team.
Chatbots and automated answers
Automated replies for common questions, like hours, prices and order status, with a handoff to a person when needed. Useful when used honestly and kept simple.
Custom real-time chat
Built into your own app or portal, for example chat between clients and staff in a client portal, buyers and sellers on a marketplace or support inside a SaaS product. Full control over data, design and features.
Keeping your site fast
Chat widgets are one of the most common reasons I find for slow websites. I add chat without the performance cost:
- Load on interaction. Show a lightweight button first, and load the full widget only when someone clicks it.
- Delay until idle. Load chat after the page has finished loading, not before.
- Load only where needed. Chat on product and contact pages, not on every blog post.
- Lightweight alternatives. Simple message links instead of full widgets when that's enough.
These changes can make a big difference to mobile speed and Core Web Vitals. More on speed optimization.
Respecting visitors
- No pop-ups that cover the page the moment someone arrives
- Chat buttons placed so they don't hide your main buttons on phones
- Accessible chat controls that work with keyboards and screen readers
- Clear privacy information about chat data
- Honest labels when a visitor is talking to a bot
Custom chat features I can build
- One-to-one and group conversations
- Typing indicators, read status and online presence
- File and photo sharing, stored privately
- Notifications by email or push when someone replies
- Message history and search
- Moderation tools and reporting
- End-to-end encryption where privacy matters most
Connecting chat to your business
Chat is more useful when it connects to the rest of your systems:
- Chat leads saved to your CRM. See custom CRM.
- Order or booking details visible to staff during chat
- Notifications to the right person. See automated notifications.
- Chat transcripts emailed to customers on request
Common mistakes with chat
Loading heavy widgets on every page. Slows the whole site for everyone.
Auto-opening chat windows. Most visitors close them immediately.
Promising live chat with nobody there. Set clear hours or offer a message option.
Bots that trap people. Always offer a way to reach a person.
Covering the checkout button on phones. Position chat carefully.
Setting expectations with customers
Chat works best when customers know what to expect. Show your chat hours, an honest typical reply time and what happens outside those hours, like leaving a message that arrives by email. A visitor who knows they'll get a reply tomorrow morning is far happier than one who waits twenty minutes in silence.
Measuring whether chat helps
Chat should earn its place. I set up simple tracking for how many people start chats, which pages they start from and how many chats turn into inquiries or orders. If chat isn't helping on certain pages, we can remove it there and keep those pages lighter.
What it usually costs
Adding messaging links or a hosted chat widget efficiently is a small project. Custom real-time chat inside an app is a larger build. You'll get a fixed quote after we talk about your needs.
How we'd work
- We talk about how customers contact you and who answers.
- I recommend messaging links, a platform or custom chat.
- You get a quote with timeline and fixed price.
- I integrate or build, keeping speed in mind.
- We test on phones and desktops.
- We launch, and I check performance after.
