Directories and listing sites live or die by one thing: can people find what they're looking for, fast? A local business directory, a property listing site, a supplier database, a list of schools, clinics, events or job openings. They all depend on search that feels instant and filters that actually narrow things down.
Many directory sites are built on plugins that work fine with fifty listings and grind to a halt with five thousand. Others look like spreadsheets dumped onto a web page.
I'm Aldrian, an independent developer. I build directory and listing websites that stay fast, look good and are easy to manage as they grow.
What I can build
Business and service directories
Local businesses, professionals, suppliers or service providers, by category and location.
Listing sites
Properties, vehicles, equipment, rentals or job openings, with detailed listing pages. See real estate websites.
Searchable catalogs
Products, parts, publications or resources with rich filtering. See B2B catalogs.
Member directories
Association, alumni or community member directories, public or members-only. See membership websites.
Event and venue listings
Events by date, location and type, with venue pages.
Resource hubs
Schools, clinics, NGOs or government services organized for easy discovery.
Features that make directories useful
Fast search
Search that responds as people type, handles typos sensibly and searches the fields that matter.
Useful filters
Category, location, price range, features, ratings you've actually collected, open now and any other attributes that matter in your niche. Filters update results instantly and can be combined.
Maps
Listings on a map, with search by area or distance from the visitor's location.
Clean listing pages
Photos, details, contact options, hours, maps and related listings, each on a page with its own URL, title and description.
Owner submissions
Businesses or members submit and update their own listings through a form or account, with moderation before anything goes live.
Paid and featured listings
Optional paid plans for featured placement, extra photos or premium profiles, with payments handled through a gateway.
Reviews and inquiries
Contact forms on each listing, and genuine reviews with moderation, if you want them.
Admin tools
Approve submissions, edit listings, import data in bulk and see reports.
Built to stay fast
Directories grow, and performance problems grow with them. I build for scale from the start:
- A proper database with indexes on the fields people search and filter
- Search designed for your data size, from database search to dedicated search services when needed
- Paginated or progressively loaded results
- Optimized images and lazy loading
- Caching for popular pages and searches
- Serverless hosting that handles traffic spikes
My Ghostly app runs on Cloudflare's serverless platform with a database at the edge, and I use the same kind of setup for fast directory sites. More on database-backed websites.
SEO for directories
Directory sites can attract a lot of search traffic when every listing and category page is useful and well-structured:
- Unique titles and descriptions for every listing and category
- Clean URLs like /clinics/cebu/pediatrics
- Structured data for listings, businesses and events
- Category and location pages with helpful content, not empty lists
- Avoiding thin duplicate pages that search engines ignore
- XML sitemaps that update automatically
Data import and quality
Most directories start with existing data in spreadsheets or old systems. I import and clean it: removing duplicates, standardizing addresses and categories and filling gaps where possible. Good data is what makes filters work.
Common mistakes with directory sites
Building on a plugin that can't scale. Fine at launch, painfully slow a year later.
Too many empty categories. Thin pages hurt both visitors and search rankings.
No moderation. Spam listings destroy trust quickly.
Filters that don't match the data. If half the listings lack the attribute, the filter doesn't work.
Fake reviews or inflated listing counts. Visitors notice, and so do search engines.
Monetization options
If your directory is a business, I can build in revenue features: paid listings, featured placement, subscriptions for listing owners, lead fees or sponsored categories, with payments handled through a payment gateway. More on payment integration.
Keeping listings fresh
Outdated listings are the slow death of a directory. Closed businesses, wrong phone numbers and expired offers make visitors stop trusting the whole site. I can add reminders asking owners to confirm their details every few months, flags for visitors to report outdated information and admin reports showing listings that haven't been updated in a long time.
What it usually costs
It depends on the number of listing types, filters, submission flows and paid features. A focused first version with search, filters, listing pages and admin tools is a sensible start. You'll get a fixed quote after we talk.
How we'd work
